My name is Sam Khankhalili, and I'm a Registered Psychologist running my own independent practice at Clear Health Psychology in South Perth, Western Australia. I also work as the Clinical Director of the clinic, where I lead and support a team of clinicians across a range of therapeutic specialties.
Coming from a strong athletic background myself, the world of performance is what first drew me into psychology. Over time, this developed into a strong interest in working with high performers, particularly athletes who want to close the gap between where they are now and what they are truly capable of.
I have extensive experience and a strong interest in working with high-performing athletes to navigate performance blocks, build the psychological edge that separates good from great, and perform under pressure when it matters most. This includes developing confidence and focus, managing expectations and setbacks, working through injury and recovery, navigating career transitions, and handling the pressures that come from coaches, teams, and high-performance environments.
Working with athletes at elite levels has shown me one consistent truth: physical ability is rarely the limiting factor. The real difference is made by the mind. How you respond to pressure. How you reset after mistakes. How you trust yourself when the stakes are high. That's the space I help athletes strengthen and develop.
Alongside performance work, I also provide general psychology support across a wide range of areas. I highly value this work, as challenges in one area of life often impact other areas. A solid psychological foundation allows individuals to function well day to day and develop patterns that can transfer across multiple areas of life.
In my general psychology practice, I work with clients of all ages, supporting concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, adjustment difficulties, grief and loss, anger, trauma and PTSD, panic attacks, OCD, ADHD and ASD, interpersonal and relationship challenges, parenting concerns, bullying, identity and cultural challenges, significant life transitions, vocational concerns, NDIS-related support needs, and other challenges that impact overall wellbeing.
"Seeking support shouldn't be a last resort when things are falling apart. It should be a normal and important part of an athlete's growth, wellbeing, and performance."

Comprehensive psychological services tailored to your needs, whether you're an athlete seeking peak performance or navigating life's challenges.
Individual psychology and performance sessions supporting the whole person, both on and off the field. We begin with an in-depth assessment to understand you as an individual, your goals, challenges, and the key areas of life influencing performance and wellbeing. Together, we clarify what you want to work toward across performance, mental health, relationships, identity, and life balance. From there, a tailored intervention plan is developed, with sessions focused on building awareness, strengthening psychological skills, and applying practical strategies to support confidence, focus, emotional regulation, resilience, and sustainable performance over time.
Collaborative psychology and performance sessions designed for teams, sporting clubs, and organisations aiming to strengthen collective performance and mental resilience. Sessions focus on key performance factors such as communication, mindset, confidence, pressure management, and accountability within a team environment. Content is practical, evidence-based, and tailored to the specific needs of the group. Ideal for teams looking to build consistency, cohesion, and a strong psychological foundation to support training and competition demands.
Engaging, evidence-based presentations delivered to organisations, schools, sporting clubs, and events. Topics are tailored to the audience and may include mindset, performance under pressure, confidence, mental wellbeing, and sustainable performance. Presentations are practical, relatable, and designed to translate psychological concepts into real-world application.
Upcoming courses designed to systematically develop psychological and mental performance skills over time. Programs are structured, evidence-based, and focused on practical application, allowing participants to build skills progressively and apply them in real-world settings. Courses are suitable for athletes, coaches, and individuals seeking sustainable performance and wellbeing.
This is where the distinction becomes clear. Now we shift from how we work to what area of psychology your goals sit within. While there is overlap, the focus, goals, and scope of Performance Psychology and General Psychology are different.
Optimising functioning in performance domains
Performance psychology is focused on optimising functioning in a specific performance domain. This can take three forms: enhancing performance to reach the next level, overcoming performance issues such as anxiety, blocks, or loss of confidence, and returning to performance after setbacks or injury. The work is goal-driven and centred around performing at your best in high-demand environments such as sport, performing arts, leadership, or other high-pressure settings.
The primary aim is enhancing performance capacity and removing psychological barriers that interfere with execution.
“How can we help you perform closer to your potential when it matters most?”
Focused on the whole person
General psychology focuses on the whole person, not just performance. This work explores the broader life domains that shape mental wellbeing and overall functioning. It strengthens the psychological foundations that influence every area of life - including, but not limited to, performance.
The aim is improved emotional health, self-understanding, and life functioning.
“What is happening within you and your life that needs support, healing, or adjustment?”
Performance Psychology | General Psychology |
|---|---|
| Focused on performance environments | Focused on the person as a whole |
| Skill development & optimisation | Emotional wellbeing & life functioning |
| Goal-specific work | Broader, deeper psychological work |
| Enhancing execution under pressure | Understanding patterns, history & identity |
| Removes performance barriers | Supports mental health and life adjustment |
Both are valuable - the direction depends on your goals.
In practice, the line between performance psychology and general psychology isn't always clear-cut. Many clients find that their work naturally moves between both areas depending on what arises.
For example, an athlete working on competition anxiety might also benefit from exploring broader patterns of self-doubt or perfectionism. Someone focused on career performance might uncover relationship dynamics that need attention. The work often flows between the two.
What matters most is that we work on what's most relevant to you at any given time. Some clients work primarily in one area, others move between both - it really depends on your needs and what emerges in our sessions together.
Regardless of whether the focus is performance or general psychology, therapy draws from scientifically supported psychological approaches. The difference is how these methods are applied, not their quality or credibility.
These frameworks are adapted for performance optimisation, helping you execute under pressure, overcome mental barriers, and achieve peak performance states.
The same frameworks support emotional wellbeing and personal growth, addressing mental health, relationships, life transitions, and deeper psychological patterns.
Practical insights for athletes, high performers, individuals, teams, coaches, and allied health professionals to better understand how mindset, emotion, focus, and identity shape performance — both on and off the field.
